  Community Involvement

As part of an on going Outreach programme, Savanna Private Game Reserve, situated in the Western block of the famous Sabi Sands Game Reserve has targeted two schools in the Gazankulu area as beneficiaries for donation and funding.

Guests visiting Savanna are offered an authentic Shangaan Village tour. Mr Zamani Mathabula, organiser of these Tours, gives the guests a traditional experience of local Village life. Part of the tour consists of a visit to the Witchdoctor, the Chief, the Chivakani Preschool and the Ian Mackenzie High School. Guests are encouraged to taste local fare which is provided on the Tour. Of the rate charged for this Tour, Savanna has added on an amount which is kept for the specific purpose of assisting the two schools with equipment, and general upkeep.

The shareholders of Savanna have allocated an annual share of profits to the community. These funds will be given to assist local schools, staff housing and other areas of need in the local village.

Guests are welcome to contribute to this fund which will be managed by Savanna. For further information please contact Paddy Hagelthorn at the following email address: paddy@savannalodge.com

"BOOKWORMS OF THE BUSH"

Schools in the local Community will soon receive an exceptional gift in the form of 12 tons of school books. These books encompass all relevant subjects and will be of great benefit to school children from Grade 1 to Grade 12. The books are currenlty being sorted into categories and subjects and will be distributed to every Primary and High School in the area.

This generous gift was donated by Macsteel South Africa in conjunction with Savanna Private Game Reserve.

SANTAS LITTLE HELPERS VISIT CHIVAKANI PRESCHOOL

With extra funds, Ms Sherreen Hagelthorn, one of the Directors of Savanna Private Game Reserve, purchased Christmas presents for every child in the school

The Chivakani Preschool requested assistance for their graduation ceremony, which was held in late November. From the school fund, donations of cold drinks, sweets and chips were given for this function. With extra funds, Ms Sherreen Hagelthorn, one of the Directors of Savanna Private Game Reserve, purchased Christmas presents for every child in the school.

These presents were handed out at a separate ceremony on Monday 29th November at the Chivikani Pre-School. The pupils of the pre-school were all dressed in their finest outfits for the occasion and could hardly contain their excitement as they jumped up and down in anticipation.

Before they received their gifts, the children delighted their audience with poetry and songs learned during the year. These little children, some of whom may have never received a new toy, were delighted with their unexpected gifts.

AUSTRALIAN STUDENTS VISIT LILYDALE

SAVANNA AND AUSTRALIA WORK TOGETHER FOR THE COMMUNITY

On a recent tour of the Shangaan Village, Mr Peter Evans from Australia, a loyal visitor to Savanna, recognised a serious need for assistance at the local High School.

On his return to Australia he rallied the support of the Glenunga International High School in Adelaide and the students raised funds to purchase 10 Computers, a large screen Television and a DVD/VHS player.

They also funded additional telephone lines into the school and commissioned the services of Softnet to install Internet lines.

Seventeen students and four teachers, including the Headmaster of Glenunga International arrived in South Africa on Sunday 28th November to spend a week at Savanna to present these gifts to the Ian Mackenzie High School in Lilydale, Gazankulu.

In addition, the students have offered their services daily to the school to give workshops on IT and programming. The students have also repainted the school. On Wednesday 1 December, a group of 20 Penryn students ( a local private school near Nelspruit) travelled to the Ian Mackenzie High School to join their peers in a fun filled, community service day. Together all students helped plant ten new indigenous trees, they planted a vegetable garden and helped the Australians paint the school walls in brightly coloured squares. All visiting students signed their names.

There were discussions between all students and interesting debates and discussions on each of the different cultures. On Thursday 2 December, the Minister of Education and the Mayor will visit the school to view the changes.

"It is a rare privilege to be able to visit one of these five star Lodges and their success is determined by the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff, most of which live in the surrounding areas. It is therefore only right that we are able to give back to this community to help create a better future for everyone "
